Golden Obsidian & Glass Owls Knitting Stitch Marker Necklace on Hand Dyed Habotai Silk Ribbon

*You will get exactly the necklace as shown. This combination of the colouration of the Owl beads (I only have 4 beads in these colours), Golden Obsidian bead and the hand painting on the Silk ribbon means that this necklace is unique and one-of-a-kind*

Especially made for “Top Down” knitters, but can equally be worn simply as a charm style necklace with the ability to add or take away new beads/charms. Made for 7mm or smaller needles.

Golden Obsidian bead and glass Owls on hand dyed/painted Habotai Silk ribbon, with silver plated metals. The round bead is natural Golden Obsidian and the Black and Amber coloured Owls are high quality Czech glass (also known as Bohemian glass) pressed/moulded beads with a patina coating.

✩Size (all measurements are approximate)✩

  • Overall pendant length- 56mm
  • Golden Obsidian bead- 12mm
  • Owls- 14x6mm
  • Silk Ribbon- once knotted gives an overall necklace length of 32 inches (80cm), which can be easily slipped over the head or knotted shorter to create a choker style necklace or anything in between.

✩What is “Top Down Knitting”? ✩

Top down knitting is the modern method of knitting in one piece from the top down, rather than creating separate panels and sewing together.

I confess to being a lapsed knitter, it has been many years since I knitted a jumper. I have never tried “Top Down” knitting. The reason why I initially made these stitch markers necklaces was because of a custom request from a friend as a gift for a knitter. Also inspired by the William Morris quote “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”, I’m happy that this necklace covers both those requirements.

These stitch markers are designed to be used over the needles and not clipped on to the wool, hence their closed loops.

✩Care of the Silk ribbon ✩

If necessary the ribbon should be washed by hand in cold/lukewarm water and mild silk detergent solution, then smoothed with your fingers and allow to air dry. Should the ribbon need ironing it can be carefully ironed by laying a piece of thin cotton over the top of the ribbon, on "silk" setting.

✩Golden Obsidian✩

Golden Obsidian (also called Gold Sheen Obsidian) is a natural volcanic glass. This type of Obsidian occurs when gas bubbles from the original lava flow are trapped in the Obsidian as it is forming. The impurities of the gasses cause a gold sheen to occur, giving the obsidian a golden shimmering appearance when the light hits it. It is quite difficult to photograph this mobile golden sheen, but I have included several photos from different angles to try show it.

✩Obsidian Mythology, Legends, Lore and History✩
*For fans of Games of Thrones this Obsidian is also know as Dragon Glass, although I'm not sure how this would help dealing with White Walkers!
*Since ancient times, obsidian has been used in making various tools such as arrowheads, knives, and saws. Today, some of the sharpest medical scalpels in the world or made from it, because of how thinly and smoothly the blade can be sharpened.
*Obsidian is a very strong gem stone of protection, worn by ancient warriors to ensure both protection in battle and also that they maintain their high standards of honour by being honest, sincere and truthful.
*Polished Obsidian was also used to make scrying mirrors for foretelling the future.

✩The hand photo✩

Meet Mephisto the measuring hand, he will help show you the rough scale of the jewellery. The hand is exactly the same size as my own hand (I’m an average UK ladies size 7 glove).
