✩Cultured Pearls✩
Cultured Pearls are real pearls, they have been made by the mollusc. Once the nucleus (usually a mother-of-pearl bead) is inserted into the oyster or mussels, the pearl growing process is the same as that of a natural pearl. Their outer coatings (Nacre) are the same material as a natural pearl, and they take years to form in a mollusc's mantle. Nacre is formed from iridescent layers of crystallised calcium carbonate. It’s pretty much impossible to tell the difference between a natural and cultured pearl by just looking at its outer appearance. The only way to make absolute certain whether a pearl is natural or cultured is to perform an x-ray of the internal structure of the pearl.

✩Pearl Mythology, Legends, Lore and History✩
Pearls are natural wonders that have been treasured for centuries by cultures ancient and modern around the world. Greek mythology proclaimed pearls to be tears of joy shed by the goddess Aphrodite. Ancient Egyptians associated pearls with Isis, the goddess of healing and life. Pearls are the Birthstone for June and the Zodiac stone for Gemini.

✩Mistletoe Mythology, Legends, Lore and History✩
From the earliest times mistletoe has been one of the most magical, mysterious, and sacred plants of European folklore. It was considered to bestow life and fertility; a protection against poison and as an aphrodisiac. The mistletoe of the sacred Oak was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixth night of the moon it is thought that white-robed Druid priests would cut the oak mistletoe with a golden sickle. Two white bulls would be sacrificed amid prayers that the recipients of the mistletoe would prosper. Later, the ritual of cutting the mistletoe from the Oak came to symbolise the emasculation of the old King by his successor. Mistletoe was long regarded as both a sexual symbol and the "soul" of the Oak. It was gathered at both mid-summer and winter solstices, and the custom of using Mistletoe to decorate houses at Christmas is a survival of the Druid and other pre-Christian traditions. The Greeks also thought that it had mystical powers and down through the centuries it became associated with many folklore customs. In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. It was also believed that the Oak mistletoe could extinguish fire. This was associated with an earlier belief that the Mistletoe itself could come to the tree during a flash of lightning.

✩Variations/findings✩
These earrings come with very secure lever back findings in Antiqued Bronze/Brass colour (as pictured) which are suitable for regular pierced ears. But can be replaced (free of charge) with:
*large kidney wires, suitable for wearing though gauged tunnels, or simply if you prefer a longer earring (this will add approximately 2cm to the overall length).

For a small extra charge, I can replace the current ear-wires with:
*non-pierced/clip-on findings
*Solid Niobium in a "fish/shepherds hook" style.
Niobium is physiologically inert and thus hypo-allergenic. For this reason, Niobium is found in many internal medical devices. Niobium's natural colour is a silvery grey, but can also be electrically heated and anodised, resulting in a wide array of colours using a process known as reactive metal anodising, which is useful in making jewellery.
Niobium is strong and highly bio-compatible. Anodising creates a thin oxide layer which is just as bio-compatible as polished Niobium. There are no other materials added and there is no plating or painting. Niobium is an excellent choice for anyone with sensitive skin, especially for those allergic to the metals such as copper added to make 925 Sterling Silver or 9ct Gold.

Jewellery: Materials

I use a variety of metals in my jewellery designs and will always give a detailed description on each item. Here is an an over view of some the the metals I use:

  • Pure Silver, also known as Fine Silver, 99.99% Silver with an allowance for trace elements
  •  925 Sterling Silver, 92.5% pure Silver + 7.5% other metals, usually copper
  • Silver Plated, 925 Sterling Silver plated/coated onto a base metal core, which can be brass, copper, pewter, iron, zinc alloys, tin, alloys
  • 9ct Gold Plated on to 925 Sterling Silver core, also know as Gold Vermeil. I use 9ct Yellow Gold and 9ct Rose Gold Vermeil in some of my designs and also offer optional replacement ear-wires
  • Titanium and Niobium optional replacement ear-wires, which are extremely low-allergenic pure medical grade metals
  • Tibetan Silver refers to a variety of white non-precious metal alloys used primarily in cast jewellery components, with an appearance similar to aged silver. 'Tibetan Silver' includes copper-tin alloys; zinc alloys; and other alloy compositions, as well as base metals with a Silver plating. It is also known as Nepalese silver, white metal, lead-free pewter or tin alloy. For more detailed information please read my blog article: What is Tibetan Silver
  • I also offer a range of other metals such as Bronze, pure Copper, pure Aluminium, Stainless Steel and lead free Pewter in either solid or plated varieties.

Jewellery: Care Instructions

Jewellery should be the last thing you put on the first thing you take off.
Always avoid getting hair products, perfume or chemicals (chemicals can include household cleaning products, some foods such as Lemons or vinegar)
General Advice:
Any metal be-it Sterling Silver, base metals or plated alloys can become dull or tarnished. As a general rule don't get it wet, if you do, dry and polish with a soft cloth. If it goes dull or tarnished, a gentle polish with a non-abrasive Silver cloth will bring it's lustre back. Gems or beads can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth to restore their original lustre.
Certain precious or semi-precious stone may require special care, I will include the information in the items full description or care leaflet.
